An Open Letter To Academia About Why I Am Taking A Leave Of Absence From My PhD Program
I will not pay lip service to your silly religions and I won't lie about and/or hide my opinions to gain your approval. Therefore, I can never have a career in academia.
The above slogan is perhaps the most empty, gutless, and insubstantial collection of words I have ever encountered in my life.
“We denounce all acts of hate, violence, and injustice.”
Jeez, guys, you really put your neck out on the line there.
So brave. So controversial.
Here are my questions for academics, including the members of the psychology department at the University of New Mexico.
Is it possible for me to ever attain a tenure track position at a major university while publicly advocating for the following positions, which I believe are important and supported by the best available scientific evidence?
There are average differences in personality traits, developmental trajectories, intelligence, athleticism, charisma, and more between self-identified racial and ethnic groups. For example, Ashkenazi Jews have an average IQ that is ~12-15 points above average and this helps to explain their over-representation in positions of success and authority. More controversially, self-identified Blacks in America have an average IQ that is ~10-15 points below the mean, which helps explain their lower levels of educational and material success (not that this is the exclusive explanation). There is no reason why these facts should keep us from treating everyone as individuals, to the best of our ability. These facts do not stop us from opposing the unfair treatment of, for example, young black men at the hands of police. I advocate for the version of anti-racism that Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for, which does not require burying our head in the sand about scientific facts. If you think anything I said above makes me a “racist”, you’re an idiot.
There are biological differences between men and women that help to explain disparities between men and women in society at large, including the so-called “wage gap”. Women tend to choose lower-paying careers on average. They also tend to choose to work fewer hours and maintain a more active social life than men. These decisions contribute to the lower average wage of women compared to men. Furthermore, when men and women become parents, they tend to have opposite reactions. Men tend to work more. Women tend to become more involved with their families. For this reason among others, the largest wage gap is basically between mothers and everyone else. Differences in outcomes between men and women are mostly due to differences in choices and abilities, not overt discrimination.
The ideology which calls itself “feminism” within academia is stupid and pathological. There is a version of feminism which I think is good and necessary, which is largely associated with first wave feminism. The feminism that I see as most dominant within academia is an ideology geared towards giving women unearned privileges based on a dubious account of female “marginalization” within the Western world. This socially destructive ideology is generally advocated for by duplicitous harpies (and spineless, whimpering “men”) who will attempt to punish and ostracize anyone who calls them out on their bullshit (e.g., the so-called “wage gap”).
These are some examples of the opinions I hold which would almost certainly preclude me from ever having a real career in academia (at least if I were to speak about them publicly), and these aren’t even close to my most controversial beliefs.
My question, for those who are in a position to answer, is whether or not it would ever be possible for me to have a career in academia while holding these positions publicly?
Will academia punish me for telling the truth, to the best of my ability?
Is there something wrong with telling the truth about what I believe?
Should my truth-telling preclude me from ever having an academic career?
Even if you disagree with me about the above, does that make it right for you to exclude me (and those who agree with me) from academic positions and prestige?
If so, what makes you so sure of your own righteousness?
At the very least, there are no shortage of academics (both professors and students) who have made it clear that they would never hire or associate with somebody who holds some of the opinions I articulated above.
I will not lie to gain the approval of mid-wits, and therefore I have to find something else to do.
What will I do? I don’t know, precisely. But I need fresh air. Solitude, if need be.
And therefore let us have fresh air! fresh air! and keep clear of the madhouses and hospitals of culture! And therefore let us have good company, our company! Or solitude, if it must be! But away from the sickening fumes of inner corruption and the hidden rot of disease! … So that we may, at least for a while yet, guard ourselves, my friends, against the two worst contagions that may be reserved just for us—against the great nausea at man! against great pity for man!
-Nietzsche, The Will to Power
And so I will leave, since I would rather be unemployed or underemployed than be forced to lie in order to gain the approval of small, mediocre minds.
For this is the truth: I have moved from the house of the scholars and I even banged the door behind me. My soul sat hungry at their table too long; I am not, like them, trained to pursue knowledge as if it were nutcracking. I love freedom and the air over the fresh earth; rather would I sleep on ox hides than on their decorums and respectabilities.
-Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra
I’d gladly go back to manual labor before spending any more time trying to gain the approval of these crabs in the bucket.
I feel good about my decision.
This is how it sounds in my mind:
If what I said here doesn’t apply to you and you know it, then I am not talking about you.
What a coincidence:
“I love all those who are as heavy drops, falling one by one out of the dark cloud that hangs over men: they herald the advent of lightning, and, as heralds, they perish.
"Behold, I am a herald of the lightning and a heavy drop from the cloud; but this lightning is called overman."
